The Best Electric Skillets Available on The Market 2017
While cooking has never been a quick and simple task, it can be made much easier with the help of an electric skillet. Besides being an excellent alternative in case your stovetop goes awry, it is also much more effective in certain situations.
The electric skillet has many advantages over the traditional counterpart. First of all, it heats food quite evenly, as the temperature is distributed equally throughout every part of the skillet. Another reason that makes me find electric skillet attractive is its efficiency: I can cook many different dishes before cleaning is needed.
That said, there are a huge variety of electric skillet models available on the market, good and awful alike, so it might be a chore for many people to find the right product. Keep on reading my article to find out the best electric skillet!
Best Electric Skillets Review
Here are my personal top 5 electric skillet products available on the market.
Presto 06857 Electric Foldaway Skillet
Currently sitting at the top of Amazon’s best-seller list, the Presto 06857 has a sleek rectangular-shaped design made of aluminum, featuring non-stick surface both inside and outside the product. This makes the product very durable, while also being a piece of cake to maintain.
It also includes a spout designed to help you remove cooking liquid without even touching the lid. The Presto’s heat control can be easily removed, allowing for simple dishwashing. Simply said, it is one of the best stainless steel electric skillet products on the market.
The product is not without its drawbacks, however. The glass lid is not very well-made, apparently, as I have found quite a bunch of customers review citing how the glass will crack or even explode into pieces if washed not long after cooking.
There have also been reports of some of the non-stick coating falling off after a few weeks of use. Personally, I find the product heats up too fast, and the center seems to heat up a lot more than the surrounding part.
- Comes in two sizes (16-inch and 12-inch)
- Dishwasher safe
- Easy to clean
- Includes liquid spout
- Low-quality glass lid and coating
- Heats up too fast
Presto 06852 Electric Skillet With Glass Cover
Like its Presto 06857 brother, the product is also made of aluminum with non-stick coating. However, the product is equipped with a large glass cover, allowing you to observe food while cooking easily. The removable heat control is also a plus; it is very accurate and much easier to use compared to the 06857 model. Heat is also distributed very evenly around the surface.
The product’s compact, attractive design means you can also place it directly on your dinner table, which makes for a very attractive dish. And similar to the 06857, this product is quite easy to clean.
That said, the manufacturer and some customers recommend that you don’t soak the product in water for too long, so it’s best to take a look at the product’s long-term usage. The legs and handles of the skillet are also quite loose, so you will need to tighten them from time to time.
- Attractive glass cover and design
- Easy to clean
- Effective temperature control distributes heat evenly
- Dishwasher safe
- Loose legs/handles
- Questionable long-term use
Nesco ES-08 Electric Skillet
What makes this product special is its size, at only 8 inches compared to most skillet products. This can be considered an advantage for some people, and a drawback for others. For me, I find the size attractive, as I usually carry this little guy with me in my travels. It is economical compared to eating at expensive restaurants.
The price is also a no-brainer, as the product only costs half as much as most skillets. Therefore, it’s worth calling one of the best small electric skillet models on the current market. For a product of its price, the heat control is pretty decent, but nothing special.
Like the two Presto models mentioned above, the Nesco ES-08 is made of aluminum with nonstick coating, allowing for easy clean up while also being dishwasher safe.
A problem with the Nesco ES-08 is that the heating element is not covered, which can be quite an injury and burning risk. I recommend placing the product on heat-resistant surfaces when cooking.
- Small and light-weight (8 inches)
- Non-stick surface, easy to clean
- Dishwasher safe
- Heating element is not covered, prone to burning hazards.
Proctor Silex 38526 Electric Skilet
This is, in my opinion, one the best products that Proctor Silex has to offer. The PS 38256 has a square design, with quite a large cooking surface. I can easily cook a meal for the whole family with this product. The product also includes non-stick surface, making it easy to clean and cook.
This model also has one of the best heat distributions, and heat control is an excellent feature as well. The price is also quite a steal, considering the size of the product and that it is also dishwasher friendly.
However, because of the big cooking surface, the product can only heat oil to a maximum of around 240 degrees Fahrenheit, the electric bill is also something you should consider before purchasing, as the PS 38526 consumes quite a large amount of electricity.
- Large cooking surface
- Non-stick surface
- Dishwasher safe
- Excellent heat distribution and control
- Consumes a lot of electricity
- Low heat capabilities
- Large and bulky
Zojirushi EP-RAC 50 Gourmet D’Expert Electric Skillet
The price of close to $ 200 may put some people off, but considering the feature EP- RAC 50 has to offer, the price is totally worth it. The product is made of ceramic and comes equipped with a titanium-infused ceramic plate, making it very suitable for grilling.
EP-RAC 50 also includes deep-dish inner pan for soup or stew and an adjustable-height steaming plate, so it is essentially the Swiss Knife of the electric skillet market.
The heat control and distribution do a fine job, but the product seems to heat up quite slowly. The non-stick coating also doesn’t seem to be working as well as advertised and can be easily scratched off, which is pretty disappointing for a product of this price. Combined with the fact that the product is not dishwasher friendly, it can be quite a chore to clean this product.
- Lots of features and utilities
- Excellent material
- Decent heat control and distribution
- Low quality non-stick coating
- Heats up slowly
Factors To Consider When Purchasing The Best Electric Skillet
+ Price: Electric skillets come in a wide range of prices, depending on their brand, material, and many other things. Most people tend to find the most inexpensive product, but I would advise against that, as a low price also means a dip in quality. After all, you are cooking food for own consumption!
When purchasing an electric skillet or any other appliances, try to set a price range, a price that isn’t too low while also being affordable for your wallet. This helps narrow down the multi-tons of options available on the market.
+ Appearance: This is something you should get a hold of once a price range has been set. Electric skillets come in plenty of different sizes, mostly between 10 and 16 inches.
When concerning the skillet’s size, try to think of the types of food you will be cooking, and how much space is available on your kitchen counter. Skillets can also come in many different shapes. Personally, I prefer rectangular or square models as I can easily fit them in many places in my kitchen.
+ Material: A skillet can be made of a variety of material, and you should base on your cooking style to choose one. If you are health-conscious, a ceramic skillet is a viable choice. Ceramic has been proven to be safe for- cooking material while not affecting the quality of your food, and it is also quite eco-friendly.
Another popular skillet material is glass. Glass skillets can be quite attractive with its elegant and luxurious look, but all they need to crack open is a small impact. If you cook a lot of greasy food or food that often leaves a residue, try using a stainless steel product.
+ Temperature: Different dishes require different cooking temperatures, and this is quite an important fact when it comes to choosing an electric skillet. While most skillets have adjustable heat, some products can be designed solely for deep-frying at high temperatures, while some create low heat suitable for making soup or stew. Because of an electric skillet’s heat consistency, I use mine mainly for deep-frying and resort to my stove for other tasks.
+ Features: Each electrical skillet product can have a multitude of different features, including but not limited to:
Dishwasher safe, meaning the product can be washed with a dishwasher, heat-resistant handles, so you don’t get burned moving the skillet, temperature control to help you set the suitable heat for your dishes, heat distribution to distribute heat evenly throughout the cooking surface, safety features, and much more.
Deciding which feature’s necessary for you and which is not will help adjust the price range even further.
Some tips when using an electric skillet
As with using any other kitchen appliances, using an electric skillet the wrong way can lead to disastrous results. So when using one of your own, there are quite a few things you should take a look at:
+ Place the skillet in a safe place: Try to place the skillet far from any electrical appliances in your kitchen that can be affected by the heat. Also, make sure to keep the skillet out of children’s reach.
+ Cleaning method: Some electric skillets cannot be immersed in water and will require careful cleaning with a rag, while others maybe not dishwasher safe. Using the dishwasher on a model that is not dishwasher safe may break your skillet altogether or even creates a fire hazard.
Because of the variety of features and temperature ranges, different electric skillets can be used for different purposes. My top pick for family cooking would be the Presto 06852 Skillet, and I would use the Nesco ES-08 for long trips away from home
